Our History!

When Lou Fortman was serving in World War II, he never guessed that he would share something in common with a vehicle that served in the war along side him.

That was a small four-wheel drive vehicle that U.S. Army Chief General George C. Marshall later described as "America's greatest contribution to modern warfare."

Later, both Fortman and that vehicle - the Jeep - emerged from the war and entered civilian life.  It was not long afterward that Fortman began selling the vehicles that GIs had known as a rugged workhorse that would take them anywhere.

Fortman was discharged from the Army in January  of 1946.  Within a week, he started his business at 602 E. State Street in Geneva, Illinois, where it remains to this day.  Lou's Sales and Service is the only car dealership in Geneva.

In 1960, Lou's son, John Fortman, started working at the family business in the shop.  In 1971, John worked in the parts department, and by 1976, he was selling Jeeps.  In 1985, John took over the day-to-day operation of the business for his father, which he still does today.  All three of John's children have worked at the dealership in different positions.  John hopes that his grandsons will soon be involved as well.

Fortman sold the franchise in 1998 but continues to specialize in selling pre-owned Jeeps, parts, service and repairs of all Jeep models, 1942 to present, including Meyer's snowplow parts and service.  Their parts department still sells original equipment Jeep parts as well as Crown aftermarket parts.  They also sell new and used parts for Willys models.

For more than 60 years, fair and honest service to it's customers has been the No. 1 priority at Lou's Sales and Service.  Certified service technicians are factory trained and can handle all service needs, from oil changes and tune-ups to major engine and drive-line overhauls.  They also are an installer of Jasper engines and transmissions.

At Lou's Sales and Service, things are different.  It's a pleasant place, not ostentatious.  The atmosphere is low-key.   This is where "business" is still done with a handshake, and "service" means more than just fixing the problem.  Instead of seeking high volume, the Fortmans eliminate things that make people dread buying a car as much as having a tooth pulled.
